The Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia (OMAA) was founded on 30th May 2010 by unanimous vote of oral medicine specialists registered in Australia and New Zealand, who recognized the need for a peak body to represent their interests, and the interests of the specialty field of Oral Medicine following the establishment of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and changes to National Registration legislation.
Currently the Academy represents more than 90% of oral medicine specialists in Australia and New Zealand, and supports full members (including fellows), associate members (trainees), and affiliate members. The Academy oversees the Fellowship Examination in Oral Medicine which is a requirement for admission as a Fellow of the Academy, and run concurrently with university exit examinations, aimed at harmonizing university training programs while increasing the standard and rigor of training in Oral Medicine.
