The primary aims and objectives of the Academy as per its Constitution are:
a) To be the peak body representing Oral Medicine Specialists and the field of Oral Medicine, and act as the authoritative adviser and policy maker on matters related to education, training, assessment and accreditation in the field of Oral Medicine.
b) To improve clinical care in the field of Oral Medicine, which is that specialist branch of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis, prevention and predominantly non-surgical management of medically-related disorders and conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial region, in particular oral mucosal disease and orofacial pain, as well as the oral health care of medically complex patients.
c) To promote interest and maintain standards in education and research in Oral Medicine in Australasia at institutions, professional associations and industries.
d) To inform governments and other official institutions of the significance of Oral Medicine for oral and systemic health, and the recognition, prevention and treatment of oral diseases.
